Women have always had the capacity to change the world, and the proof is in the decision of the Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to three outstanding female activists–Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Tawakkul Karman, and Leymah Gbowee. How do you juggle being a mom and an entrepreneur? What resources, tips, or advice do you have for your fellow Mompreneurs?

If you had a mentor help you launch and grow your business, you know how valuable their advice and experience was to starting a business. The Institute for Economic Empowerment of Women (IEEW) understands how important mentorship is, and how hard it can be for women entrepreneurs in other countries to find the right kind of help for their businesses. Their “Peace Through Business™” program, entering its fifth year, is bringing 29 women entrepreneurs from Afghanistan and Rwanda to the U.S. to take part in leadership development. These enterprising small business owners will partner with American business owners in similar industries around the country for training. The program will culminate in the IEEW Summit July 25th and 26th in Washington, D.C. University of Dubai Entrepreneurship and Business Plan for Women Entrepreneurs:  The Middle East is not a region known for its support of women, especially professional women entrepreneurs. However, the University of Dubai, located in one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, is leading the way in turning that around. In a first of its kind program for the region, UD recently completed a workshop for women entrepreneurs to help them learn the tools necessary to be successful businesswomen.

As women in America struggle with pay inequities and balancing family life with their careers, there are other women who are fighting for their lives and for basic human rights. This was especially true in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, where death could be the penalty for something as audacious as trying to get an education. The things we take for granted here in our free country are hard to come by there. But this interesting article from FastCompany highlights the strides that women entrepreneurs are making in war-torn Afghanistan. As blogger Alice Korngold writes, instead of thinking of Afghan women as victims, we need to change our perceptions and see them as the innovative, resourceful, and successful entrepreneurs they are. Read it and be inspired!

Early this morning, a devastating earthquake rocked Japan, triggering a massive tsunami resulting in thousands of deaths so far, as well as threatening the Hawaiian islands and the west coast of the United States. The videos released are horrifying, and make you feel small and helpless. But there are some things that we can do. When starting a business, earning a profit is obviously at the top of your list of goals (unless, of course, you are starting a non-profit). But an interesting study has found that women entrepreneurs, more than their male counterparts, tend to have an equally important goal–to be socially conscious and run their business in a way that will benefit others.

Sociologist Mary Godwyn is releasing a new book next month based on research she has done on the clientele of the Small Business Administration’s Women’s Business Centers. In it, she explains that there are two types of entrepreneurship–profit-driven and social. The women she studied refuse to be buttonholed into one of those categories and in turn are not only making a healthy profit, but changing the lives of others in their communities, as well as overseas. Read this interview with Godwyn for more insight into women entrepreneurs and their innate desire to add social value to their businesses. Then come back and tell us, what social value does your business add to your community? How can you become more socially conscious?

Wild women entrepreneurs aren’t just found in America.  Women entrepreneurs in China are getting a helping hand from a government program that assists them with starting a small business.

The Tianjin Women’s Business Incubator has helped 10,000 women entrepreneurs in China get back on their feet after losing their jobs.  The initiative microfinances the poor, rather than large companies that are struggling, to encourage them to start their own small businesses. Innovation is a global ideal, and the TWBI hopes to tap into women’s desires for independence and success.

The best part is that thanks to easy access to small business advice, many of these businesses have been successful even though most of these women have no experience running a business.  Most women have been able to repay their loans to the organization. Another example of how a little help can go a long way!

In the spirit of things, I’m going to recommend Google Voice.

Just in case you didn’t hear,  Google Voice lets you screen calls, takes voicemail and you can forward your  calls to your mobile, work or whatever location(s)  suit you.

Recently, I have been using my Google Voice account to contact venues for an event I’m throwing. Its convenient because I am not giving out  a personal number.  The interface is nice because you can read your voicemail in your account don’t have to listen to voicemail “in order” like with most phones.
